Private & Group Classes

  • Much of our daily activity involves sitting for extended periods; sitting at school, work, driving or watching TV. As a result, many people experience tightness in the hips and surrounding muscles. Yoga postures, traditionally called Asana, innately involves openers for the hips. Though ancient (500-1,000 years), Asana is a relatively new aspect of yoga, at least classical yoga, and was developed for the purpose of long periods of sitting as required in meditation, a more ancient yoga practice (3-5,000 years). The physical practice of yoga also assists releasing energy from the body to make relaxation and even sleep come more easily. Whether planning to incorporate seated meditation into your practice or not, or if you are looking for tools to help with relaxation or sleep, it is advantageous to regularly focus on hip openers simply for long term hip health, mobility and strength. Hip mobility, in combination with overall body strength is likely to enable a person to more easily get from seated to standing and vice versa and can be linked to longevity. A well-structured class includes progression from big to small muscles, general to specific movements and easy to complex postures will open and release the hips in a safe and effective way. A class of this progressive nature allows for the individual to see and feel the changes over time and improve comfort and overall life satisfaction.

  • Yoga includes a variety of movements in all planes of motion using primarily body weight to develop effective overall strength relative to your body weight. Strength is ability for muscle to exert force on a load. Power is the velocity or speed at which the force is applied or exerted. A yoga class with vinyasa flows that encourage a tempo matched with postures sometimes held for longer periods improve these qualities of fitness. Consequently, one will find that muscular endurance also improves, particularly as breathing techniques are intermixed for maintaining strenuous activity for an extended period. Appropriate pauses and rests are recommended as one develops these fitness attributes.

  • Using weights with yoga is a great way to add strength development to a yoga class particularly when seeking to challenge strength beyond body weight. In addition to strength, low weights with yoga postures can promote activation of small muscles that get overlooked with movements primarily controlled with larger muscles. This is of great benefit for joint stability and movement precision.

  • Life, with its demands and pressures, often brings about overwhelming and/or accumulative levels of stress. This can be very taxing and discouraging for individuals. Left unmanaged, accumulative stress can create a downward spiral leading to an array of other health problems. It is possible, however, to acquire life hacks for the management and reduction of stress and improving the quality of life. These life hacks are available through yoga; via postures, breath techniques, meditation and other tools. Yoga allows us to transform stress and achieve optimal well-being.

  • Sometimes yoga is better experienced from a seated position. This may be for a variety of reasons such as injury, back pain, recovery from surgery, arthritis in the lower body joints, loss of limb or paralysis or for any other reason that lower body movement or strength is limited. Yoga from a chair or a seated position can facilitate just as many benefits as standing would. This class is for anyone with or without limitations. We simply learn new ways to practice yoga, making it accessible for all.
